The Bonadio Group has been awarded a Top Workplaces 2019 honor in Rochester and Albany, New York by the Democrat and Chronicle and Albany Times Union, respectively, and a Best Places to Work honor in Buffalo by Buffalo Business First. In Rochester, we placed second in the mid-size business category and were this year’s highest-ranked accounting firm on Democrat and Chronicle’s Top Workplaces list. This marks the fifth year that The Bonadio Group has been named a Top Workplace in both Rochester and Albany. Additionally, The Bonadio Group earned third place in Buffalo Business First’s large employers category as one of the Best Places to Work in the Queen City.
Insights talked with Allyson Roote, director of learning and organizational development, about the importance of achieving the designation as a Top Workplace.
Q: Why is earning a Top Workplace honor so special? A: What’s most rewarding is that the list is based solely on feedback from our employees. That’s significant because those are the people who drive results and create culture. As Bruce noted in his message to employees, Top Workplaces is an especially meaningful award because it reflects our commitment to the Bonadio Purpose to provide opportunity, strengthen community, and inspire growth for our clients and employees.
Q: In Rochester, The Bonadio Group also earned the “Direction” award. What does that represent? A: The “Direction” award means that employees feel the firm is headed in a positive direction. Earning the “Direction” award was especially meaningful at a time when we’re transitioning to only the second CEO in the history of the firm. The award reflects employees’ appreciation for the outstanding firm that Tom built over the past 40 years and their great confidence in where the firm is headed under Bruce’s leadership.
Q: What are some key attributes of The Bonadio Group that were cited by employees? A: Strong collaboration, open communication, and effective dialogue are several aspects of working here that employees rated highly. It was clear from the results that our employees take great pride in what they do and the difference they’re making.
Q: The Top Workplaces criteria emphasize a workplace culture that supports employee engagement. How does your team track and foster employee engagement and satisfaction? A: We conduct an annual Bonadio Inspired Culture Survey, which gives us helpful feedback and insights on what we’re doing well and what we can do better. Business leaders are then responsible for determining an area of focus for their groups and creating action plans based on survey results. It’s a process that gets everyone invested in working together for continuous improvement. We also focus on maintaining a healthy workplace through culture programs, initiatives, activities and opportunities for employees based on our shared core values of People, Respect, Opportunity, Maintaining Balance, Integrity, Service and Entrepreneurship.
Q: What’s an example of values in action? A: One of the most visible examples is in the area of Maintaining Balance. We provide unlimited PTO, half-day Friday, Dress for Your Day, and similar perks to help employees stay balanced. It’s ultimately about creating an environment in which employees can excel so that they aren’t simply delivering a service, they are delivering an experience.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add about being named a Top Workplace? A: We’re so fortunate to have this really strong purpose-driven culture. Again, management didn’t create it. Our employees did. And it’s our employees who will continue to move us forward and take us to even greater heights. Being named a Top Workplace is really special. All the thanks go to our employees.
